Welding rebar to a structural steel embed plate?

Welding rebar to a structural steel embed plate?

(OP)
I want to weld some #6 A706 rebars to a structural steel embed plate. This embed plate assembly will be designed to transfer shear force to concrete using ACI's shear-friction method. Thus, the weld of the rebars to the embed plate will have to develop the full tensile strength of the bar.

I haven't specified this type of weld before. Do I simply call for a full penetration weld of the rebar to plate to develop the full bar strength?

Also, ACI states that the welding shall be performed in accordance AWS D1.4. Does this adequately cover the procedure? Or is there any else I should specify?

Thanks in advance.

The PCI Manual calls for 7/16" fillet weld all around. Assumes 60 ksi steel, E70 electrodes and 5/16" minimun thickness plate.

An all around fillet weld can also provided the tensile strength required. But, you will have to size the weld. I don't have a copy of D1.4. But in D1.1 there is not a prequalified procedure for CJP welding a round shape. I know it is done, but I don't know if the procedure requires qualification.

Have you considered specifying deformed bar anchors installed with a stud welding gun.

I have specified DBA's in the past as well.

It’s no trick to get the answers when you have all the data. The trick is to get the answers when you only have half the data and half that is wrong and you don’t know which half - LORD KELVIN

Thanks. I found the same table in my PCI deign manual and match your numbers. Easy enough.

No, I did not consider those. Is there a reason why using these would be better? I assume they meet the rebar deformation requirements for development per ACI?
