Welders per joint

Welders per joint

Welders per joint

(OP)
Hello everyone,

My issue has to do with the limitations of a welder to produce a single pipe joint. Is there a condition per ASME B31 codes or ASME sec IX, that stipulates when a pipe joint must be welded by a couple of welders instead of a single welder? Usually we establish that for a NPS greater than 12", two welders must work on the joint simultaneously on each half of the joint instead of only one, and the client also requires this, but no one seems to know if this requirement came from any code at all.
thanks in advance,

RE: Welders per joint

No Code provides this requirement. It is up to the Employer whether, one, two, three or more will make the weld.

RE: Welders per joint

All the welders I ever knew each demanded their own:)

ok, thanks!

From my understanding, such requirement would help in preventing possible misalignments due to contractions of the root opening while the welder takes on half of the joint. I've seen cases where a single welder is told to weld a large joint by quarters, following a welded quarter with the opposite quarter.
