use of Ligament in calculating thickness of header for Internal Pressure

use of Ligament in calculating thickness of header for Internal Pressure

(OP)
I have a question about approach for calculating thickness of 18"Manifold/Header with multiple opening by ASME Sec I for Internal pressure.

I am using self reinfoced weldolet to compensate this opening . so what I thinking, I will calculate thickness as per PG-27.2.2 with E=1.0(considering no ligaments applicable because of weldolet)

now somebody has raised mark on my approach and he is saying that it would be design with Ligament as per PG52 (irrespective of reinforced weldolet).

please guide me ..which approach is right one.any clear details given in ASME SECI for this.

Also suppose if I dont use weldolet, then it is must to use Ligament efficiency or first I will check this pattern form really ligaments and not comply with PG38/PG32.1.2.

WHAT IS CORRECT APPROACH TO CALCULATE THICKNESS OF HEADER WITH OPENING.

RE: use of Ligament in calculating thickness of header for Internal Pressure

Per PG-32, PG-52 may be used for holes in a definite pattern, ie it is not mandatory. If you can satisfy PG-33, PG-36, PG-37 and PG-38, then your approach is correct.

If I am using Reinforced weldolet, still I need to comply with PG-33, PG-36, PG-37 and PG-38 to avoid use of Ligament efficiency for calculating thickness of Pipe?

RE: use of Ligament in calculating thickness of header for Internal Pressure

Yes, you do. You must demonstrate compliance with code. It is not only a matter of reinforcement, but possibly also of distance between openings.

Just opened my Sect I and read the PG-33, PG-36, PG-37 and PG-38 requirements. Not an onerous requirement in my opinion, as the calc's can be done on the back of an envelope.
