UT instead of RT

UT instead of RT

The code now allows for UT inspection instead of RT under UW 51 (4) . If I am building a vessel and the extent of examination is outlined as UW 52 for spot RT can i substitute spot UT?

RE: UT instead of RT

I don't see why not since it is permitted in UW-51 as an alternative to RT. You need to have a detailed map for UT as you would for spot RT. The Inspector would need to concur with this approach.

RE: UT instead of RT

i think it has to be phase array

RE: UT instead of RT

You need to review 7.5.5 "Ultrasonic Examination Used in Lieu of Radiographic Examination" in ASME Section VIII, Div 2 for what is involved.

We are only certified to Div 1 so I do not have the Div 2 book to refer to. Do you know if there is a similar section in Div 1? The inspector has said as long as it is according to code he will agree but I do not have a clear answer for him. Phased array will cost more than RT for one 6" spot but again the code is not clear if that is acceptable.

RE: UT instead of RT

Review Code Case 2235-9.

Thanks stanweld it was exactly the code case I was looking for.

RE: UT instead of RT

Having been through several jobs using UT in lieu of RT I think you're going to find that for Spot examination, it's not worth it. Just the qualification blocks will likely cost you more than the RT you'd be doing.
