Punching holes in angle

Punching holes in angle

(OP)
How close to the inside radius can a fabricator punch a hole? I have 7x4x.375 angle and a architect wants a 1" slotted horizontal hole at 1.5" up from the heel of the angle. I am not sure that can be done.

RE: Punching holes in angle

Call the fabricator??

RE: Punching holes in angle

AISC Manual 14th Ed, Table 1-7A gives workable gages in angle legs. For 4" leg, the gage is 2 1/2". For 7" leg, it's 4" for one fastener or 2 1/2" & 3" for two fasteners. The foot note says that other gages are permitted to suit specific requirements subject to clearances and edge distance limitations.

AISC Manual 14th Ed, Table 7-15 gives entering and tightening clearances for conventional bolts. For 1" dia bolt, the minimum distance to the center of the hole from the fillet is given as 1".

RE: Punching holes in angle

That's right at the edge of what our shop could do with our Anglemaster. If I really need it I can get 1 1/8" from the inside of the angle. They prefer 1 3/16". Never had an issue using the AISC dims referenced by DST.

From what I understand though, there are a lot of variables. Punch size, angle thickness, equipment capacity, offset punches. I don't believe our machine can handle 7" angle so it might be totally different for a machine that can.
