Best FEA software for joint modeling

(OP)
I am looking for suggestions on the best FEA software for modeling joints, connections, custom base plates, etc. We are using RISA which does a good job on wire-frame models and handles basic plate model pretty well. But, we are often requested to make finite element models of more complex joints, such as 3-dimensional tubular truss joints with members coming together at various angles. It is possible to create this model in RISA, however, it is very time consuming and frustrating. It seems like a FEA program could take the member information contained in a wire-frame model and create a plate model of a joint based on the member information.

Does anyone know of another software package (SAP2000, STAAD, etc...) that makes this process easier?

Your input is appreciated.

RE: Best FEA software for joint modeling

sounds like RISA is a 2D modelling tool ? ... sounds odd, old (like 2D Autocad), and cheap ...

NASTRAN, ANSYS, etc ... making 3D trusses is easy. you probably want to pay more attention to the front-end and back-end processors, eg FeMap is a nice GUI (uses NASTRAN as it's FEA engine) ... easy to make models, modify them, see results, has the full suite of NASTRAN elements (including zero length springs, for joints, if you want them.
