HDU vs STHD for Hold-Downs

HDU vs STHD for Hold-Downs

HDU vs STHD for Hold-Downs

(OP)
I have moved away from specifying STHD's because I have seen too many "mis-installs" of them where the contractor bends them over to hook onto the studs.

What is your opinion of the 2? The STHD is stronger everywhere but at end walls. Anyone know how much difference there is in labor to install them? It's been 10+ years since I did any framing.

RE: HDU vs STHD for Hold-Downs

Fortunately in my area (that I know of) the misplaced/bent holdowns were red-flagged and the contractor has to replace them. After doing this a couple of times the contractor made sure they are placed correctly the first time. Hopefully, the special and city inspectors here have and will always red-flag them.
