Hello all. Has anyone performed, spec'd or witnessed a jack and bore (or similar installation) on a precast box culvert? I am considering this type of installation for a two cell precast box and am wondering if it is feasible. I have heard that it has been done in the past but have not seen it. I think of rectangle being pushed through a round hole. I am hoping some information can be provided on this installation method:

Can you provide back ground on your installation?

What was the cover criteria?

What are the Pros & Cons?

What problems were encountered?

yes it can be done and I have seen it
  • there is no round hole, although you could use a round auger to help remove the soil
  • the box needs to be designed for the axial jacking force and the jacking force will be very large. This could be a limiting factor.
  • you will need a geotechnical engineer and a jacking contractor on-board to help you evaluate your design.
  • Expect it to be enormously expensive
  • problems encountered will depend mostly on specific details of your installation

Thanks cvg. I will try to get in touch with a jacking contractor to get more information.
