O condition aluminum

O condition aluminum

(OP)
Hello all,

We are looking for recomendations on tooling for machining 6061, 7075, 2024 in the O condition. We have up to 24000 rpm available on a variety of CNC machines. We are currently using OSG Blizzards, and Onsrud single flute up cuts. Both work fine until we get into the O materials. Any input would be appreciated.

RE: O condition aluminum

The O condition is great for spinning or flow forming. Not so much for cutting. Can you anneal after machining?

RE: O condition aluminum

Hi Rwild,
The worst of your aerospace 'gang' will be the 2024. It will be sticking on the tool. O condition worsens the stocking pb.
As you knew it, Climb milling is preferred for these alloys.
Chip load will start large and finish small (there will enough volume to dissipate heat).
for the three alloys avoid using Ti coated tools, PCD tools are the best,why....
Ti thermal conductivity is very low
Al thermal conductivty is very high
--means all heat will stay in the chip that will overheat and stick.

best tooling choice wiil PCD or Diamond if possible
both have very high thermal conductivity and will help to move the heat to the tool and decrease the overheat.

please dont speak in rpm, it does not mean anything,it depends on your tool diameter, You should work with sfm or m/min

Best regards,
