Cantilever racking

Cantilever racking

Cantilever racking

(OP)
Are there any regulations regarding the use of racks with no known capacity? We use a cantilever rack for the storage of materials including brass, steel, stainless, aluminum, etc.. Some bundles weighing over 1000 lbs. per. When the question of capacity arose, I was told there is no known capacity because the racks had been altered, but was still expected to continue storing materials on this rack with the knowledge that anything put on said rack was my responsibility. I find it hard to believe it can be my responsibility when I have no idea when a shelf is filled to capacity. Any knowledge or comments would be appreciated.

RE: Cantilever racking

I am not sure if OSHA addresses this but I bet they do by saying something that all "Maximum Loads Shall Be Posted"

You or your company is responsible if something should happen.

I would suggest you either get them analyzed, find the mfg or replace.

BTW - You can search the regs online..

RE: Cantilever racking

Be an engineer. Document the structure, calculate and post the safe load. Done.
