AISC J10.2 Web Local Yielding
AISC J10.2 Web Local Yielding
(OP)
I'm going through some hand calculations on a Beam to Column moment connections and there is something in this section that doesn't make sense to me.
The column capacity for web local yielding is given by equation J10-2:
Rn = (5k+N)*Fy*tw
I am trying to make sense of AISC's comment that N is "not less than k for end beam reactions".
Are they talking about the k of the column or the beam? If they're talking about the k of the column then why should this affect the value of N? It doesn't seem to make physical sense to me.
If they're talking about the beam's k distance, then does this apply to my moment connection? Or, do they mean a different type of connection when they refer to "end beam reactions".

The more I looked at it the more I was convinced that it did not apply to my connection. But, then I really wanted to understand what types of connections it would apply to. Seated shear connections makes more sense than anything else. Though the 'k' distance still seems like an odd that they're using k rather than k1.
