wind load on simple platform

wind load on simple platform

(OP)
Hi

I have simple single level, steel platform supported on piles, with bar grating on the top.
How to calculate wind loads on it. I was told to use ASCE7 wind loads on other structures equation using Figure 6-22 for lattice framework.
I’m not convinced that using this figure is applicable in my case.
I found definition of lattice framework as one faces frame, and I understand that wind pressure would act perpendicular to that face.
In my case face of the structure that wind would be applied to is only depth of the member which is 12" and its length.
So is figure 6-22 appropriate and why, or which figure should be used?

Thanks

RE: wind load on simple platform

Wouldn't you use the open structure values?
With that you use the prescribed uplift and there is a paragraph in ASCE 7 that requires you to use parapet wind loads on flat "roof" turn down edge beams.

For the columns, I'd use wind for sign post legs.

I was thinking about that, but that would create uplift, however but how can I justify presents of uplift if I have bar grating on the top?
What about lateral wind component? None in that case?

RE: wind load on simple platform

Even with grating you will have some wind uplift - and that depends on how dense the grating is. Wind isn't directly proportional to the opening percentage so a grating with 50% openings doesn't have 50% of the wind force but rather something larger due to wind drag through and around the bars.

Lateral wind would be that on the face of the edge beams per the open structure provisions (see 6.5.13.2 of ASCE 7-05).
