Interferences between nozzles

Interferences between nozzles

(OP)
Hi All,

We have to design a vessel at high temp. 700C according to DIV2, the result of P-elite shows that two nozzles are close to each other and there is interference between them, even the available area is higher than the required. we make a FEA for these two nozzles and the stresses based on the applied piping loads are OK. The relocation of the nozzles has a huge impact in our design. please let me know your opinion, can we deviate code regarding the interference between two nozzles if the stresses based on the FEA are ok?

Thanks in advance

RE: Interferences between nozzles

Please clarify what kind of interference you mention and what is the PV Elite alert to that interference. For nozzles proximity reinforcement, refer to ASME VIII-2, clause 4.5.13 as follows:
'4.5.13 Spacing Requirements for Nozzles
4.5.13.1 If the limits of reinforcement determined in accordance with paragraph 4.5.5 for nozzles in cylindrical or conical shells or paragraph 4.5.10 for nozzles in spherical or formed heads, do not overlap, no additional analysis is required. If the limits of reinforcement overlap, the following procedure shall be used or the design shall be evaluated in accordance with the design by analysis rules of Part 5.'
Accordingly, you don't have to deviate from the code, but use the analysis of Part 5.
Cheers,
gr2vessels

RE: Interferences between nozzles

700°C is too high to be performing a Part 5 analysis. So, how did you

actually do an FEA? What criteria did you use to determine that things were "OK"?
