metal orientation

(OP)
Hi everyone

I recently bought a steel bar that is 2"x2"x12". The supplier told me that it was cut from a forged plate. I notice that the plate that my bar was cut from was forged from a circular bar. What I wanted to know is the orientation of my bar in reference to the plate. From the document, the plate seems to be 6.25" thick, 13.75" wide and around 50" long. I notice that there is a letter "G" marked on one surfaced with an arrow which point in the direction of the longitudinal direction of my bar. So I wonder whether that "G" stand for grain direction (i.e. in simple terms, whether that is an indication that the longitudinal axis of my bar is the same as the longitudinal axis of the plat)? I need to know this quite urgently, so I am trying to work this out without testing. Any help would be great.

By the way, the bar has been cut on all surface from the supplier, so telling from surface finish is not quite possible.

Many thanks in advance.

RE: metal orientation

Call the supplier and ask them. Any advice that you would get here in this regard is speculation.

RE: metal orientation

Maui is correct, you need to contact the supplier directly.
