Hello all,
There is a debate here about Stress Relieving HK Stainless. After the stress relieve operation,a 14" O.D, 13"I.D. of a 180" long tube goes through the Grinding Operation where .040 is removed from the O.D. Some say you are putting all the stresses back into the roll. Some say only a small percentage of stress is put back into the roll if you keep the roll cool during grinding.
What are your thoughts on this? Whos right and whos wrong?

thats only .040" = .020 stock per surf.
I agree with this procedure.
depending on the manufacturing process of the tube. if it is form rolled, welded or seamless form, stress relieving it before the final close tolerance machining is to my opinion the optimal method. because the tube will distort slightly during the stress relieve operation. then the close machining can be finished with very little stressed induced.
just make sure that the grinder is removing a conservative amount of stock during each pass.
just curious how round & straight are the pipe before grinding?
