model will not check in with duplicate part names

model will not check in with duplicate part names

(OP)
hello - i had a model last week that would not check into the vault - i tried several times to check it in but it refused - someone in our group told me that they were able to check the model in - i asked why & they told me that i could not check the model in because there were other files in the vault that contained the same names as were present in my model - i was told that in the future i was to use specific names or numbers in my model & that would solve the problem - i have never heard of this but this person has pdm works training - any info or help would be greatly appreciated - thank you

RE: model will not check in with duplicate part names

He is right... all your files that are to reside in the vault must be unique names. That is why Part numbers are used, because every part must be a unique number, because P/N's can never be the same twice.

If you plan to use PDM/PLM, then you must come up with a solution to have unique names... just naming a file block1, block2 is not going to be sufficient.

RE: model will not check in with duplicate part names

Your co-worker is quite right. More to the point, you should get some training ASAP before you inadvertently create irreparable damage to existing files. At the very least, please go through the tutorials. Spend some time picking your co-worker's brain. Maybe you can get some actual training?

RE: model will not check in with duplicate part names

That isn't just a SolidWorks or PDM thing; It's true for all Windows based programs.

RE: model will not check in with duplicate part names

I agree with the others.
It was 'always' been that way. Ever try to copy any file into another folder with a file of the same name?

RE: model will not check in with duplicate part names

Solidworks Enterprise PDM has a part number feature that will automaticly name all of your new parts, assemblies, drawings, and other files with a unique part number when adding a file to the vault.

Im not sure if PDM Workgroup has the same feature, but we found it to be very helpful compaired to all the manually filled out databases we where working with before setting up EPDM where I work.
