Cast vs. Forged ASME B16.5 Flange (316 SST)

Cast vs. Forged ASME B16.5 Flange (316 SST)

Cast vs. Forged ASME B16.5 Flange (316 SST)

(OP)
The ASME B16.5 standard appears to allow the use of cast or forged material for the construction of flanges.  There does not appear to be a difference between pressure ratings for 316 stainless cast or forged material.

I have only ever seen forged material supplied for 316 stainless flanges, but is is possible to receive cast material if you weren't careful in specifying the ASTM spec?

RE: Cast vs. Forged ASME B16.5 Flange (316 SST)

I've often wondered this myself:  why aren't CF8M threaded flanges widely sold, to be used with CF8M 150# threaded fittings?  Must not be much of a cost advantage versus forging I guess.

The only time I routinely see cast flanges is as part of cast valves, pumps or lined fittings.

beh188, I would say that if you do not specify a forging the supplier would be within his rights to supply a casting, if one is available.

as SnTMan wrote, simple order an ASME B16.5, ASTM A182 F316 flange (add to that description the type of flange, e.g. WNRF, pound class rating, schedule, etc). Youll then get it forged..
