High Temperature Flange

High Temperature Flange

High Temperature Flange

(OP)
Hi,

I am working on a filtration vessel that will have an operating temperature of 850˚C. The vessel will be constructed of Alloy 800HT. At this temperature the material will have a limited life service because it is in the creep range.

The flange temperature in ASME B16.5 (2009) for this material goes up to 816˚C. Two questions on this,

Is this because the material will be within the creep range above this temperature?

Is it possible to use this material above 816˚C in a flange application?

Thank you,

timlynx

RE: High Temperature Flange

Alloy 800HT (UNS N08811) a listed material in ASME B16.5?

If not, then you'll have to custom-design your flange based on your vessel's code of construction, like say ASME VIII-1 Appendix 2.

Yes Alloy 800HT (UNS N08810 (1)) is listed in ASME B16.5, the forging is B 564 Gr. N08810(1). Page 60.

By the looks of it, i will have to prove the clasification via calculations and have a limited life service.

RE: High Temperature Flange

Correct. You have design by rules and design by analysis. The code provides leeway for design by analysis.

RE: High Temperature Flange

B16.5 app A may also provide some background for extrapolating the rating.
Section II-D tells me that SB-564 may be used up to 899 deg C max.
