editing the Hole callout text file

editing the Hole callout text file

editing the Hole callout text file

(OP)
Does anybody know a way to edited the hole call out to display 4 plc diameters next to standard ANSI and METRIC drill sizes in the hole wizard?. I'm always diverting to look up diameters then back to the letter or fractional drill sizes. Would be a great time saver.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

Not so sure the "4X" designator isn't built into hole wizard and is unchangeable by the user. There are areas of the software where they need to give the users more control, and this is certainly one of them.

Work around is to manually edit the text of each and every hole callout on your drawing, but that gets tedious on drawings with multiple hole callouts along with removing the auto update functionality from the edited callouts.

Put in an enhancement request and wait years to see it implemented, if at all.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

The file, "calloutformat.txt" defines these. You can make changes, but be sure to save an un-modified version in case things get messed up. You will have to redo this each time you upgrade, however.
I do not know how you'd get number or letter sizes to display, however.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

At the bottom of the calloutformat.txt file are all the hole wizard variables you can use.

<hw-fstsze> will get you the fractional, letter or number drill size.

You do not need to update the file every new release of SolidWorks.  Put the file out on your network and path to it under System Options > File Locations.  You should do this for all your standards.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

Anna, thanks for that tip. I changed mine years ago and lost it on an upgrade, so I never updated it again.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

Actually tried Anna's method and found the place in the property manager to edit a specific callout. The <hw-fstsze> variable is what the wizard thinks the designated fastener size is.
I've also moved and updated my calloutformat file as suggested. No more questions about "the funny symbols" in my hole callouts.
I still haven't figured out how to get the callout to be the number or letter drill size instead of the decimal or fraction.

Thanks all for your input.

I was hoping to find a way to display the decimal equivalent of a letter or number size - just to speed up design work. I realize that it would not be possible to do that via a text match.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

Not without some tricky programming or macros involved.

RE: editing the Hole callout text file

I use <hw-fstsze> in my hole charts all the time for number, letter and fractional drill sizes callouts.

I am not placing hole wizard holes using the Screw Clearance Type.  I select Number, Letter, Fractional or All Drill Sizes in the Type dropdown.

Anna, now I get the difference in your way and my way.
