14400:120 PT fuse change

14400:120 PT fuse change

(OP)
silly question from a green horn.  anyone familiar with a load break device to pull this fuse hot?  or would the common recommendation be to take an outage.  this is on a manufacturing facility that would love to avoid an outage.

also, what have you seen as likely causes for PT fuses to blow?

thanks in advance.

RE: 14400:120 PT fuse change

In some kinds of metal clad 15kV switchgear, the PT is mounted in a roll out drawer, which pulls the entire PT+ fuse assembly out.

For outdoor applications I have seen hot stick removal.

What kind of PT and where is it located?  Have you made any attempt to determine why the fuse is blowing?  I would not want to be the person inserting a fuse into a faulted PT.

See the recent thread http://eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=320853
on the possible reasons for a blown fuse.

RE: 14400:120 PT fuse change

Why would you need a load break device to remove a blown fuse? If the fuse is blown there is no load.

RE: 14400:120 PT fuse change

Strongly recommend against replacing a blown VT fuse with the system energized.

It's impossible to tell if it's a fuse failure or a problem originating from the VT itself. Closing a fuse into a damaged/faulty VT could be dangerous.

Need to check out the VTs prior to trying to re-energize, e.g. megger test, ratio test, and possibly excitation test (if you have comparative results).
