I am connecting two cylindrical pieces of metal, each 2.0" outer diameter, together end to end. One piece has the diameter reduced to ~1.5" and the other has been machined out to accomodate the other piece internally. Four holes have been drilled in both pieces of metal, at 90 degree spacing and each of these has been tapped to accomodate 1 x 5/16" - 18 x 1/4" mild steel socket head bolt. Could anyone confirm the shear strength of this connection assuming that all 4 bolts are fitted.

The force F necessary to separate the two components is:

F = 4 * τ * A

where

τ = screw material ultimate shear strength in pounds per square inch (since you didn't provide this, you will need to do the final calculation)

A = screw thread shear area
A = π/4*[D-(1.3/n)]2

where

π = 3.141592654

D = screw major diameter

n = threads per inch

With the information you provided, the answer is:

F = 0.181 * τ pounds
