Seeking input/experience/comments on the use of Dual Grade/Certified 316/L.  At issue – AI, internal engineers ( me among them ) and management are "uncertain"  in addressing the use of dual grade material and how to document it on manufacturing drawings, GA drawings and in calculations using PVElite, Compress or hand calculations.

One of the issues is that 316/L, to the best of my knowledge and research, is not officially recognized in Section II and doesn't have a UNS number associated with it. My solution is to add a material to the software database - 316/L,  and list it as S31600/S31603. That way we are, in my interpretation, meeting the requirements of using material with specifications listed in Section II.

This also, makes "bookkeeping" easier as the calculations in the software and the drawings at both manufacturing and customer level all explicitly match.

Thoughts?  Experience?  Interpretation?

Thank you.

doct9960,

Thanks for the input. This whole issue would be so readily resolved, IMHO, by the recognization of the material 316/L.

ASME has documented more interpretations on this; mandatory appendix 7 of Section II-D may also be useful for understanding.
I think more section have appendices on this topic, to my knowledge, at least VIII Div 1.
