Hatch area, island detection

Does AutoCAD / Civil3d / etc exclude the area of the islands when listing a hatch entity's area?

I'm running Bricscad currently, which is a pretty outstanding AutoCAD clone, and noticed something.  When you list a hatch area, and the hatch has islands in it, the hatch area doesn't exclude the islands.  I can toggle the hatch between islands and no-islands, and the hatch area doesn't change.

Scratch that, it appears that the area does exclude the islands, but it does no matter what your island detection settings are.
