Hi all, does anyone know what is the minimum forces or capacity of a steel connection if the forces from the analysis is very low. say less than 30% of the design capacity of the member. I am currently using BS code (BS 5950) and i cant seem to find it on the code.

I know that AISC has a requirement about the minimum capacity that needs to be developed in the connection. i forgot what it the exact figure...

can anyone advice me on this?

Not sure on BS Code.  In AISC they use 10 kips (LRFD) as a minimum factored shear force for connections.

I do the same thing as JAE. I'll place 10kip as a minimum on the design drawings- required or not.

I don't know about the British code, but in AISC, the old minimum capacity requirements (6 kips ASD, 10 kips LRFD) have been gone since the 2005 (13th edition) specification.

I have always used a two bolt minimum but I have a question: are more than two bolts required for safety during erection? I know OSHA was looking at that, I wondered if they decided to require two drift pins and then bolt in a third hole

WillisV - I think you are correct that the mandate/specification for a minimum connection strength is no longer in the text of the AISC specification - it is still found in the commentary for J1.1 (in the 13th edition).  I'm not sure if the 14th still mentions it (got an AISC seminar on the 14th Ed. coming up next week).

Commentary is not legally binding, just pointing out it was moved into non-mondatory language, though I agree it is still a good idea.  14th Ed. is same as 13th in this regard.

I use the capacity of 2 bolts... since I stipulate all connections must use 2 bolts...

Thanks for all of your replies. Does AISC have a minimum capacity for moments if you have a moment connection (i usually use a minimum of 60% of the member capacity)?

The Australian standard requies something similar, 40kN which is about 10kips. Where the design actions are small I limit the connection to member capacity if it can't handle the 10kips.

Australian standards require a minimum of 30% or 50% of the moment capacity of the member for moment connections (depending on how you interpret the code).

I spec to 45% of the shear capacity of the web for the max, but two bolts minimum of the size you are using.
