Inspection Opening [ UG-46 ]

Inspection Opening [ UG-46 ]

Dears ,

We are constructing a SS vessel in which we found at the dispatch stage that there is violation of inspection opening size requirements as per UG-46. Now, AI and end user has asked that existing 16" man way with 16mm neck thickness, should be increased to have min. 400 ID to meet UG-46 requirements. I want to use existing welded repad with increased nozzle opening in vessel wall but it is not meeting with nozzle reinforcement required as per UG-37. Please advise if there is some way to use the existing pad with addition of pad from in side of the vessel. As i see there is no option in PV Elite to consider two pads ( both insider and outside the vessel) to meet reinforcement area requirements ?

RE: Inspection Opening [ UG-46 ]

Its odd and unusual, but not specifically forbidden.  Thus acceptable if the AI and the customer's Jurisdiction will accept it.

I'd make a semi-scale cross-section sketch to go with the hand-calc's you will be doing, showing thicknesses.

Duwe6,

Thanks for your reply.

My query was little misleading ( sorry for that ) as d'end are already welded and it is difficult to repad from inside ( that i realized later ). Now, there is no option that repad could be welded from inside.

Therefore, we might have to increase the nozzle opening by cutting the nozzle and repad, increase the opening than weld new nozzle neck and flange to meet the requirement.

Also, i my opinion, double pads ( pad with different ODs and welded on top of other ) is not possible? at least, I cannot find that configuration in Fig. UG - 40. Not sure, even it is recommended to do so.

RE: Inspection Opening [ UG-46 ]

You are correct, stacking repads is not allowed - I forget the spot in VIII that says that.
