API 1104 Welder Qualification Questions

API 1104 Welder Qualification Questions

(OP)
When testing welder to API 1104, is the material an essential variable? Can I give them a 12" butt and branch test with Grade B STD wall pipe, 6010 downhill all the way and they be good for all thicknesses and diameters and grades?  The reason why I'm asking is we are welding Grade B pipe all the way up to X70.  I have 10 different WPS's but the only rods we are using are E6010, 7010 and 8010 (All group 1,2).  Basically all essential variables are the same but the pipe grade's differ.  Also, if this works out, since I have 10 different WPS's, would I choose one to test them on and only write the one tested on my WPQ or would I also input all procedures they are qualified for (All 10 WPS's) since they passed the initial test?  As you can probably tell, I'm a newbie so all help is appreciated.  Thanks.

RE: API 1104 Welder Qualification Questions

For welder qualification only, base metal is not an essential variable per API 1104; most multi-qualifications are performed using Grade B/X42 (cheap and readily availiable in NPS 12).  However, some Company specifications may require the test is made on the same grade as production welding, so you should be aware that the company specification may be more restrictive than API 1104.

Your comment regarding the welders being qualified to use all ten WPS' is valid provided  multi-qualification is performed, meets all requirements of API 1104 6.3.1 and both tests are successful.  Use an appropriate WPS that incorporates 6010 and 8010 for the test as 8010 tends to operate slightly differently than 6010, and you will want to give them a test that used production consummables.

BTW, this and your previous post would have been more appropriate in the API Code Issues section.
