ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

(OP)
Hi all
Can anyone enlighten me on the tensile test retest criteria in ASTM A370 and any specifica references.
I am under the impression that once a tensile has failed, a double retest can be performed. If either of the retests fail the material is then considered failed and the only option then is to HT

RE: ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

LEB1;
No, this is incorrect. ASTM/ASME A 370/SA 370 provides specific guidance for test type and methods for testing. If a problem occurs, a retest is mentioned (for eample failure outside of the gage length). Beyond this guidance, either the engineering specification for testing should address further protocol if the test was invalid or the design code or code of construction provides protocol for retesting and number of specimens.

RE: ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

metengr is correct.  The only provisions for retests in A370 is when there is an obvious problem with the test or specimen that is not related to the material properties.  If the engineering specification does address a retest protocol, then a test failure should result in the material being rejected.  If in a manufacturing situation, the manufacturer should have a protocol for dealing with a failed test in their written procedures to deal with these siturations.

thanks for the info I needed to clear this up and both your imputs have been very helpful

RE: ASTM A370 Retest Criteria

The retest that you refer to would be in a product spec.
A370 just tells you how to do the test.  The test frequency and acceptance limits, as well as retest rules would be in a product specification.
