Best New Thing from the South Bend Tech Summit

Professor Krishnan Suresh did a presentation on geometry optimization (PareTO) at the April 17th Tech Summit. The method he presented allows a designer to find the optimum geometry of a part very quickly.

What he does amounts to doing numerous FEA runs starting with a block of material with loads applied to it and then removing material that is not contributing to the stiffness. All the user does is supply boundary conditions and how much material is to be removed as a percentage. This method converges very rapidly. Once the optimum shape is arrived at it can be brought into CAD (SolidWorks) and cleaned up. From there a Simulation run would be used to do a final check on the optimized geometry.

This method is much faster than iterating in Simulation and is much faster than current optimization methods. It also can utilize Nvidia GPU processing power for a huge increase in speed.

There is a free Lite version that is very capable. A video of the method is here.
