Rates for Metallurgical Consultants

Rates for Metallurgical Consultants

(OP)
For those of you who work as metallurgical consultants in industry in the United States (or those of you who hire them), what are the hourly rates that are typically charged? Does it vary from job to job, or is it normally a flat rate across the board? I'm trying to get a handle on what consultants who specialize in this area can demand in today's marketplace.

RE: Rates for Metallurgical Consultants

Maui;
For known and highly qualified metallurgical consultants of which I have hired and paid PO's in the Power Generation sector;

Lab Engineers - $150 to 180.00 USD/hr. This is for report preparation only.

For metallurgical consulting at client locations plus travel costs -
Sr Associate - $180.00 to 200.00 USD/hr

For Root Cause Analysis and specific projects -
Sr. Associate to Sr. Consultant - $200.00 USD/hr to $250.00 USD/hr

Litigation -
Upwards from $200.00 for case preparation to 500.00 USD/hr for court time.

RE: Rates for Metallurgical Consultants

Those rates sound about right.
Typically when I am doing a short job those would apply.
If someone has a few weeks of work for me I might come down from those just a bit.
It depends on how much I like working with them and how much future work there is.

Metengr and Ed, those numbers are slightly higher than what I would have expected. But then it's been several years since I've looked into this. Thank you for the helpful replies.

RE: Rates for Metallurgical Consultants

metengr, those rates sound accurate for your market.

Rates will slide up and down depending on the industry sector and the geographic territory.  The rate structure can be substantially higher in hot areas like oil & gas, or where business costs are higher; e.g., northern Alberta.  Larger consulting companies also tend to charge more due to their overhead.  IMHO the most cost-effective route is a proven, experienced independent consultant.  (But then I am biased.)
