Sticky material Separation and Disposal

Sticky material Separation and Disposal

(OP)
Hello All,
To recover Low moisture DMF from its Mother Liquor which contains DMF, Water, KCl and other impurities. here KCl and other impurities clog togather to become black sticky material. This sticky material is separated in 500 ltr capacity Tubular filters. the process of distillation is continous and under vacuum. when the filter get choked it is hard to remove the material from filter and its walls. materil forms roof in filter. How to deal with such sticy materil under cont. vacuum process???

RE: Sticky material Separation and Disposal

I don't understand your process description which includes distillation and tube filters. However, it sounds like a solvent recovery process so that is what you should Google. Scraped surface heat exchangers or evaporators are often used. Sticky materials are very difficult to handle and the solution may be to make it non-tacky by adding solids or liquids.

RE: Sticky material Separation and Disposal

Filter pluggage generally speaking can be somewhat corrected by back flushing a selected solvent through the filters.  Or another common approach is to have two sets (or more) of filters so when one becomes plugged flow is switched to the other while plugged filter is taken out of service and cleaned or filters replaced.

RE: Sticky material Separation and Disposal

So assuming that the DMF will phase separate from water, why don't you "wash" the mother Liquor with water and phase separate it before you go into the column to reduce the amount of salts, etc in the bottoms of the column.
Is that a possible solution?

Here is another thought that I just had after posting.
Can you steam the filter housings intermittantly to flush the tar material out?

RE: Sticky material Separation and Disposal

you can separate that in centrifuge or nutche filters.
