Building a blow off separator

Building a blow off separator

Building a blow off separator

(OP)

I am in the middle of obtaining a CSA shop designation for our fab shop.  One of the items I need to complete to finalize is a test project.

I am looking at building a blow off separator for steam boilers and need help in 2 areas.

1. I am looking for information or someone to help design the vessel.
2. Some one who can perform all of the code calculations.

Design:

CSA B51.1
AMSE Section IX

150 psi MAWP
500 F MAWT

We want the vessel to be built out of 14" A53 grade B sch 40, End caps will be 14" sch 40, vent outlet 6" flanged, drain 4" flanged, blow off inlet 2", 1/4" pressure gauge tapping, and 2 2" inspection openings

Any help would be appreciated

RE: Building a blow off separator

Where are you located?  Most fab shops are capable of providing the necessary vessel calculations and registering the vessel.  If I just put the city I live in and "pressure vessel shop" I get lots of hits.

This isn't my area of expertise so the comment may not be correct but I thought A53 GrB is an obsolete material, you're much likely to find something like A106 GrB which is also a higher pipe quality.

I've done that kind of calc for new fab shops a couple of times.  The code does not require that you have an engineer on staff, just that the drawings are done by a competent individual and that the calculations are documented.  I would suggest finding a small 1-3 person mechanical engineering firm in your areas and have them do the design for you.  You aren't going to get what you need here, you will have to pay someone's hourly rate.

I don't mind paying the hourly rate to get this done.  I am not trying to get someone to work for free.  The problem is in the BC area we are very limited on engineers who can / will do this type of work.

Try one of these.

I haven't dealt with either in over a year so hopefully their contact info is current.  A google search of 'pressure vessel consultant' should turn something up for you.  If having no luck in BC, include 'Canada' in your search.  All work can be done remotely and emailed to you.

Thanks for the info
