Element selection guide

Element selection guide

(OP)
Is there something like an element selection guide for beginners? If you know something like it, I would be very greatful if you would share.

As a student I got a whole lot of Abaqus assignments thrown at me without ever having had any classes. Choosing the right elements is a big sticky point. The Abaqus manual is assuming too much of an advanced reader for me to be able to use it (I obviously studied it multiple times).

What I am looking for is something like a discission tree, or suggestions for typical scenarios. Like: "if the scenario is dominated by bending stresses opt for linear/quadratic, full/reduced XYZ elements because....", "if blablup is likely to occur check for dubidu and consider using XYZ elements".

Actually the biggest issue I have is deciding between reduced and full integration and linear and quadratic. I read the terms hourglassing and shear locking a million times now, but I just cannot apply any of what I read to my models.
