split beam elements ?

split beam elements ?

split beam elements ?

(OP)
i need to split a pile of beams.  it was easy to split the attached skin panels, but there doesn't look as though there's a similar tool for beams/rods ?  i have scanned the manual and the available options ... "break" breaks line geometry entities (and not model entities).

the most expedient way i can think of is to export the bdf file, modify it and import (since i already have the required nodes, from splitting the panels).

RE: split beam elements ?

Mesh > Remesh > Refine

Note that I have been unable to figure out how to "unrefine" a beam element, but you can split beams (into 2, 3, 4....) using this menu.

thx, worked a treat !

i had used the "split elements, interactive" command to split the quads, and it just ignored the beams.  i went the the help nad got nothing for "splitting beam elements".

RE: split beam elements ?

To be honest, I found on accident one day. Seems I tend to learn better from mistakes. :) (So take care, once you loose "undo" you'll be in a quandary if you did not mean to split the beams!)

so "save before you split" !

RE: split beam elements ?

One big difference between Split Elements (quads) and Remesh (beams) is that for beams the loads are not automatically updated. That can sometimes be an issue.

that's an interesting observation ... sound like something they should look into
