AESO Grid Requirements on Industrial Plants

AESO Grid Requirements on Industrial Plants

AESO Grid Requirements on Industrial Plants

(OP)
I am new in interpreting grid requirements of AESO (Alberta) imposed on industrial plants.

We are designing an industrial plant wherein we are taking 240kV incoming line from the AESO grid. Our industrial client installs, owns and operate the 240-72kV switchyard substation and from this substation our client will installing and operating his 72kV lines supplying power to different industrial process areas. In this 72kV lines, our client is intending to install 1 x 50MW, 13.8kV STG and 1 x 50MW, 13.8kV GTG with their associated 13.8-72kV step-up GSU transformers. Both GSU transformers are tied up to the 72kV lines owned and operated by the industrial client. which in turn is connected to the same 72kV bus where the secondary of the 240-72kV transformer is connected.

I am aware that the 240kV grid interconnection with the industrial plant's 240-72kV substation should comply to AESO grid requirements.

However, are the 72kV lines and interconnected plant STG and GTG still have to comply with AESO requirements (generation requirments) if they are already within the industrial plant battery limits (72kV lines) and are not designed and operated to export power but only to cater power solely for plant load demands. (technically, these generators are  in parallel with the grid through the industrial plant's 72kV transmission lines.

I am struggling to obtain the AESO functional specification for our project from our client.

RE: AESO Grid Requirements on Industrial Plants

I don't know AESO, but if the generators are operating in parallel with the "grid", then the "grid" gets to set the requirements.  There may not be any real power export, but if there is a fault on the external grid, the generators will contribute fault current.

I think this is what you are looking for.

Additionally, the AESO website has a well documented process for what you are trying to do.

As davidbeach said, you are connected to the grid with the generators and thus you have to follow the interconnection rules.  This is a very common requirement, in my experience.

OP, if you don't mind me asking, are you a consultant working in Alberta?

Thanks smallgeek for the links. Deltawhy, I am not a consultant but I am involved in the design of the interconnection as a technical specialist who is technically curious about it.
