4500ft run
4500ft run
(OP)
Hey guys,
I have a house project, my problem is that utilities are 4500ft away in talking to the electrical contractor he said that we could use 4/04/02 URD wire and two 120/240V to 600V, N3R, single phase transformers (sized for 100A * 240V). I am not sure what my line loss would be or if this is adequate. I don't want to fine out 5 yr down the road that I should have used bigger wire or have added more transformers. One other thing i would like to have 200A not 100A if that would make a difference.

Are you sure you need 200 Amps??
I think my house is fairly normal. I have a 100 Amp service. We have gas heat and hot water but an electric clothes drier and an electric range. We also use the normal electric appliances such as a micro-wave, a toaster, two refrigerators and a freezer, and a coffee maker.
We are in a rural area and are demand limited.
Our nominal demand is 5 KVA. (I said nominal) The utility limits our demand with a 35 Amp breaker. In the two years since the service went in we have never had a breaker trip.
If we had a large shop the utility would require us to use and pay for pay for a 10 KVA demand.
Why do you think that you need 200 Amps?

Bill, FWIW, our local utility will hook up a 100A service, but they discourage same. Most new construction is 200A or larger. We don't have those $%^&* residential demand charges yet.
