4500ft run

4500ft run

(OP)
Hey guys,
I have a house project, my problem is that utilities are 4500ft away in talking to the electrical contractor he said that we could use 4/04/02 URD wire and two 120/240V to 600V, N3R, single phase transformers  (sized for 100A * 240V). I am not sure what my line loss would be or if this is adequate. I don't want to fine out 5 yr down the road that I should have used bigger wire or have added more transformers. One other thing i would like to have 200A not 100A if that would make a difference.

RE: 4500ft run

You need a local electrical engineer.  At 4500 feet, I'd try to get the utility to extend their primary most, if not all, of that distance.  600V is certainly better than 240V, but isn't the right voltage for that distance.

For 200 Amps, double the cost.

Are you sure you need 200 Amps??
I think my house is fairly normal. I have a 100 Amp service. We have gas heat and hot water but an electric clothes drier and an electric range. We also use the normal electric appliances such as a micro-wave, a toaster, two refrigerators and a freezer, and a coffee maker.
We are in a rural area and are demand limited.
Our nominal demand is 5 KVA. (I said nominal) The utility limits our demand with a 35 Amp breaker. In the two years since the service went in we have never had a breaker trip.
If we had a large shop the utility would require us to use and pay for pay for a 10 KVA demand.
Why do you think that you need 200 Amps?

RE: 4500ft run

The answer depends on what your utility will or won't do. If you can get the primary extended to a more reasonable place doing so may offer several advantages. Not the least of which is that you won't have 4500ft of wire to buy, install and maintain.

Bill, FWIW, our local utility will hook up a 100A service, but they discourage same. Most new construction is 200A or larger. We don't have those $%^&* residential demand charges yet.

RE: 4500ft run

I wonder if akironman would be way better off thinking out of the box.   Use ultra efficient appliances and go entirely off grid.   Use the money for running miles of wire for solar panels or something else that results in never having a utility bill.
