Split Body splits everything!
Split Body splits everything!
(OP)
Hello,
The Split Body tool is lacking in the ability to allow the user to choose which bodies will result from a split operation.
Often I have a shelled object on which I want to create a split body on ONE SIDE ONLY. But the Split Body tool creates a split body on both sides! Therefore I need to either create a surface first, then use the surface to split the body on one side, or use the Unite tool and combine the unwanted split body with the main shelled body. Either way is a problem because you need to create an extra feature which (1)causes more work, (2) creates extra clutter in the part navigator and (3) will complicate the rebuilding process if the sketch that creates the split body is changed.
Please refer to the attached image for how it's done in Solidworks. No issues at all there. A shelled cube is being split with a circle sketch. During the split operation the user can select which bodies he wants the create from the split operation. In this case the user selects the front split body (body 3) and ignores the split body in behind, thereby creating just 2 bodies in total instead of 3. This is very powerful and intelligent.
Is there something I've overlooked in NX?

However, CNSZU seems to feel that his productivity will go to hell if he has to create ONE extra feature.

As for not specifying that I'm using NX8 is because I assumed that since I've mentioned what version I'm using before on this forum, that it would be superfluous. However, I'm going to remedy this by specifying it in my signature.
NX8
RE: Split Body splits everything!
I'm pretty sure John is not keeping a list of who uses what version of NX...

Now if the discussion goes to such things as performance, graphics issues, part file size problems, etc, then some inquires may be appropriate as to your CPU configuration, memory, graphics card, etc. However, since the primary business of Siemens PLM Software is supplying SOFTWARE solutions and that this is a UG/NX forum, at a minimum we need the version of the NX software which you were using when you encountered the issue that is being discussed, whether you were working in a managed mode (ie, using Teamcenter) and on what brand of OS is your software running (Windows versus Linux versus MacOS).
If those 3 pieces of information are always present, as would be the case if you're using the signature feature and had included that information, along with whatever personal/employer information that you're comfortable with providing (and is allowed by the Eng-Tips powers-to-be), then that should be fine.
