CODE for Multiple BUILDING ENTRANCES

CODE for Multiple BUILDING ENTRANCES

(OP)
I have a building with 440 3 phase on a demand meter. There are 2 additional power company meters outside and 3 (200 amp) single phase circuits. Does anyone have the Electrical and NFPA Code for the maximum number of allowable entrances / (disconnects) allowable to shut down an entire building in case of fire or emergency?
Thanks

RE: CODE for Multiple BUILDING ENTRANCES

Six. But I'm not sitting near my NEC right now to give you chapter and verse.  (NFPA 70)

Caution:  your local code may vary.

Good on ya,

Goober Dave

RE: CODE for Multiple BUILDING ENTRANCES

Well, service entrances and disconnects are different things.  The basic rule is that there should be only one service per building, but there are exceptions to this rule that allow multiple services.  See 230.2

As Dave said, the NEC allows a maximum of 6 disconnects per service. See 230.71

Thanks Guys,,, you answered my Question. I was not where I could pull my NEC or NFPA.

I have a 440 3phase feeder on CT's and Demand Meter. It was used for heavy air compressors in the shop area. There is a 220 single phase circuit for an apartment and another 220 Single Phase for lighting. I am studying the advantage of installing a transformer on the 440/3phase circuit and getting rid of the other two feeds. I could sub-meter the apartment inside the building if it is ever rented.

Anyone have experience as to whether shifitng the load to the demand meter will save me any money? The commercial rate is lower than a business/residential service. It also makes a transfer switch to emergency generator simple.

RE: CODE for Multiple BUILDING ENTRANCES

It would also be illegal in many jurisdictions for you to sub-meter the apartment inside the building if it is ever rented.
