AISI 4130 for line pipe

AISI 4130 for line pipe

AISI 4130 for line pipe

(OP)
Is it common for AISI 4130 to be used for line pipe for a B31.3 piping simply because it's a high pressure line, knowing that 4130 is unlisted material in B31.3. Does it sound like the right thing to do. I know there's paragraph K dedicated to high pressure stuff in B31.3.

Thank you.

As much as possible, do it right the first time...

No.

RE: AISI 4130 for line pipe

Stronger is not always better.

If the pipe is welded, there are many factors to consider besides strength.

Ductility and the ease of welding quickly come to mind. Will the high strength low alloy steel require high preheat? Will the pipe be post weld heaqt treated after welding? If the piping is classified as high pressure, is the HSLA steel capable of meeting notch toughness requirements? Are fittings available as off the shelf items or are they special oder items? What is the LAST expected? Are there other base metals that have better weldability and better notch toughness at the LAST expected? Is it easier to increase the pipe wall thickness than to require expensive and involved welding procedures and controls?

Best regards - Al
