Hi, I dont know know if anyone in this forum can Help,  I'm a process operator offshore on a large gas plant but will very little mechanical knowledge.  

I'm working on trying to understand the mechanic seal and how it actually functions but i have trawled the internet for an idiots guide or some animation and I still am at loss,  Can anyone help ?

there is some videos on Youtube.
API682 will help.
Some training in any of mechanical seal mfg could help.
John Crane, Flowserve, Eagle Burgmann could help you to undertand better.
