How to mate tapers in assembly?

How to mate tapers in assembly?

How to mate tapers in assembly?

(OP)
I have two simple parts that are tapered (male/female). I am trying to mate them in an assembly. Once I get them mated concentric, what is the next step to get them to mate - think machine arbor in spindle.

Thanks for your help!

RE: How to mate tapers in assembly?

I prefer to use the axes with a coincident mate, but if the tapers are identical, selecting both surfaces with a coincident mate will also work.

In the fully mated state, at the small end, one of the conical surfaces will end before the other.  I would try two things:

  1. Make the circular edge formed by the end of the conical surface coincident with the other conical surface.
  2. Place a reference point on the circular edge described above and make that point coincident with the other conical surface.

I'm with the Limey.  Use axes and the coordinate planes of the parts to make the mates.

coincident mate of the faces works perfectly - this mimics real world exactly.  Constrain rotation with Angle/Parallel/Perpendicular -your choice.
