Min thickness for a weld?

Min thickness for a weld?

Min thickness for a weld?

(OP)
Is there a minimum base material thickness for a CJP groove weld? (or really for any weld?) Basically, I am trying to determine whether two pipe sections can be welded together if one of them has 16 gauge steel....

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

I am sure AWS will have your spec - but from personal experience, welding 16 ga is a bit difficult!!

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

With the appropriate equipment, the weld described can be made. We have qualified procedures (for use in a construction environment) down to .030". And one can make welds in thinner materials WITH THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT!

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

Yea.  It's called JB Weld. bigsmile

.03" and less?  Wow!  I've always limited it to about .07" or one pass of a 1/16" weld.  I'll have to take your word for it.

msquared48, oh, yeah, I know guys who can weld razor blades together. Looking in a mirror.

Do you mean that all of those stainless steel aircraft exhaust pipes I welded, can't be done?

B.E.

The good engineer does not need to memorize every formula; he just needs to know where he can find them when he needs them.  Old professor

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

I bet all the others are only considering arc type welding, if you include electron, laser and diffusion bonding (which is solid state welding) you could join  almost anything.

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

You need the proper equipment and properly trained people for any task.

RE: Min thickness for a weld?

berkshire:

No, just never heard of it until now.  Always dealt with larger material.
