I am trying to understand why B31.1 and B31.3 list the material prefix A (ASTM) and not SA (ASME) in thier stress tables. Can someone enlighten me on this a bit please?

B31.1 "nonboiler external" and B 31.3 are not part of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code; thus, the SA materials requirements are not applicable.

Is SA acceptable? Should i be specifying ASTM ONLY on B31.1 B31.3 NBEP work. While specifying SA for BEP (PP stamped)

SA is acceptable but you may be restricting yourself with regard to materials selection and economies of purchase.

First..thank you for your time...Second ...I know its logical that SA is acceptable but can you tell me why or where this is stated.

For B31.1, review 102.3.1 (C) and 123.1.1 (D).
