Measuring void fraction

Measuring void fraction

Measuring void fraction

(OP)
Hello -

I want to measure of void fraction of mulch. I know if I can get the bulk density and the displacement of  a known mass of mulch then I can figure the void fraction.

Mulch floats. I want to submerge a 1 lb sample of mulch, but need to keep it submerged to measure the water displaced. If I use a weight to keep the mulch submerged, then I can figure the displace.

I'm wondering what methods are typical for measuring void fraction.

Thanks -

Rob

RE: Measuring void fraction

Measure the volume dry, then put it in a bucket of water filled to the brim, measure the overflow.  You will probably want to measure it again as saturated mulch, in which case leave it in the covered bucket for a week and measure how much more water it takes to fill the bucket to the brim again.

I'm going to use a 5 gallon painter's bucket and weigh the mulch on a postage scale, lbs +/- 0.2lbs.

I'm figuring take 1 lb exact of same material and place in filled widemouth 2 L beaker. Insert material and measure volume required to top back off.

How you reckon we get the mulch under water?

Thanks for the help.
