High strength flange with material of ASTM A694 F65 for 32" pipeline

High strength flange with material of ASTM A694 F65 for 32" pipeline

High strength flange with material of ASTM A694 F65 for 32" pipeline

Dear Colleagues,
I'm in charge of checking the integrity of a high strength flange with material of ASTM A694 Gr. F65 for 32" pipeline. The design pressure and temperature for this flange is 140 bar and 90 C respectively.
My question is "Which standards could be applied ?"

ASME B16.47 : A694 has not been defined in this standard and there is a limitation on pressure-temperature rating (up to class 900)

MSS-SP-44 : Fortunately A694 has been defined in this standard but there is limitation on pressure-temperature rating (up to class 900)

ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 1 : A694 has not been defined in this standard but fortunately there is not any limitation for pressure-temperature rating.

Many thanks in advance
Hadi

IT IS MSS-SP-44

OVER #900 You'll have to design it yourself.

Dear BigInch

As per Annex A of MSS-SP-44 the following design criteria for maximum allowable stress have been defined :

Longitudinal Hub Stress : 205 Mpa
Radial Flange Stress : 140 Mpa
Tangential Flange Stress : 140 Mpa
Bolt Stress : 140 Mpa

As per this standard we can apply a range of flange materiel grade from F36 to F70 and therefore I expected to see the allowable stress as a function of flange materiel grade.

In the other hand in the calculation sheet of the flange manufacturer the allowable stress has been adapted as per grade F65 which is reasonable, i.e.

Longitudinal Hub Stress : 284 Mpa
Radial Flange Stress : 189 Mpa
Tangential Flange Stress : 189 Mpa
Bolt Stress : 362 Mpa (ASTM A193 B7)

What's your advise ?

You can use the mfgr's allowables.  The MSS values are the MSS required minimums to permit use in #900 service.  The item can be designed to permit higher stress levels and that is apparently what you have purchased.
