non-sparking starter pinion requirement?

non-sparking starter pinion requirement?

non-sparking starter pinion requirement?

(OP)
Hi,

I've noticed that many times someone will specify that they want a non-sparking starter pinion for the starter on  a diesel engine to be used in a classified (Class 1 Zone 2) area... while I understand the reasoning behind such a request, I'm so far unable to figure out which standard(s) recommend that practice.  does anyone know offhand which standards dictate the use of non-sparking starter pinions (like copper-beryllium)?

It was this literature which prompted my question, since a careful reading of it shows that the listed standards do not require cu/be.

(Also, I was thinking of US standards, but that's not critical - I'm curious either way)
