Mud Gas Separator mal-funtion or failure on a drilling site

Mud Gas Separator mal-funtion or failure on a drilling site

Mud Gas Separator mal-funtion or failure on a drilling site

(OP)
Hi,

Does anyone have any installation or operation recommendations for failures in a drilling mud gas separator (MGS). The two main types of failures encountered are:
1. Mud/liquid carry over to gas line due to either plugging of the mud dump line or othe reasons AND
2. gas to the shaker due either to undersized or poorly designed gas vent line or no back pressure or enough mud leg on the mud dump line.

If design is done and vessel is sized properly, what can you think of as recommendation to ensure this is mitigated, OR have you had any experience with this???

THANK YOU.

As much as possible, do it right the first time...

RE: Mud Gas Separator mal-funtion or failure on a drilling site

Had a case with sand separators and perhaps a similar case with  a glycol dehydrator.  The separators were always plugging and we were losing so much glycol that my boss thought someone was stealing it.  Turns out that they were trying to run 60 MMCFD through a 40.  Resizing and replacing all of them with larger models cured the problems.
