Post Weld Heat Treatement Requirement in ASME IX

Post Weld Heat Treatement Requirement in ASME IX

Post Weld Heat Treatement Requirement in ASME IX

(OP)
Hi;
Actualy we are working on a WPS for an isolating joint wich have a material with P Number P1 and thickness up to 31.75 mm. Due to welding temperature (250°C)we did not specify a Post Weld Heat Treatement.
We want to know if PWHT requirement is indicated in ASME IX or another standard.
Regards.

RE: Post Weld Heat Treatement Requirement in ASME IX

The requirement for PWHT of the involved weld is not in ASME IX. It will be in some other Code; e.g., B31.1, B31.3, B3.4, B31.8, ASME I, ASME VIII, etc. If the design/construction Code were  ASME VIII, Div.1, your weld would be exempt from PWHT.

BFZHA, it depends on your piping code, what kind of facility are you building and to what code?

As much as possible, do it right the first time...

Thanks for your reply,
The piping code is ASME B31.8 and ASME VIII Div.1.

It may also depend on the fluid service.  Requirements for sour service may dictate that PWHT is required if the hardness maxima cannot be achieved without it.

RE: Post Weld Heat Treatement Requirement in ASME IX

Assuming that PWHT is not required for service as per SJones, PWHT is not required per 825.2 od B31.8. If T exceeds 31.75mm (1 1/4"), PWHT is required.
