Bolt hole depth on a pressurised flat plate

Bolt hole depth on a pressurised flat plate

Bolt hole depth on a pressurised flat plate

(OP)
BACKGROUND
I am usiing ASME VIII-1 UG 34e to desing a flat plate wchich attaches to the end of a flangeg spool.

The flat plate bolts to a weld neck flange (WNF).

In the aseembled state, there is a stud which slides through the bolt hole of the WNF. A nut tightens on the side of the WNF. Whereas, the bolt screws into the flat plate. The hole in the flat plate is not a through hole.

Machinery Handbook 27th Ed, page 1510 lists formulas of ,
  i. Stress Areas and Length of engagement of screw threads
 ii. Stripping of Internal Thread
iii. Load to break the threaded portion of screws and bolts

QUESTION
i. Is the length of engagement of the stud equal to the depth of hole in the plate ( that is to be designed) plus the depth of the nut ? Do I include the portion of the nut that is in the bolt hole in the flange.

ii. How do I determine the minimum thickness of the portion between the hole and the blind side.

There is an error in the second portion of the first question.

Portion of the stud...not nut.

Did you review UG-43?

I had not. I am looking at it now. Thank you very much.
