What is this and what does it do?

What is this and what does it do?

What is this and what does it do?

Hi, I am not an engineer but a volunteer for a spanish ONG in Madrid. we have a 15kw generator" Changfa Chinese clone". The other day I accidentally reconnected the battery the wrong way and burnt out the wires for the starter circuit. we replaced the wires and it now starts ok and generates current. There was one burnt out wire which goes what i think is a "rectifier" or "regulator"
We disconnected it and the genset still generates current.
Here is a photo of it  it is the red wire that is now burnt out the green ones are ok.

RE: What is this and what does it do?

Some of those generators have a charging rectifier for the battery (and external batteries). If that rectifier, which it seems to be, burns out - the genset will work until the battery is flat.

Not so sure about it, but a couple of cent's worth.

Check the battery and see if it is on its way down.

Half full - Half empty? I don't mind. It's what in it that counts.

I agree with Gunnar.
The cheapest fix may be a small trickle charger powered from the generator to charge the battery. That is how the battery is now charged on my gen-set, pending proper repairs. grin

Ok thanks , looking at some websites ,I came across a qiring diagram , which I don´t understand but have a friend who does. Thanks for quick reply guys

RE: What is this and what does it do?

If that module is just a rectifier, the diodes may have been hefty enough to survive. Just replace the wire and add an appropriate fuse.

If the diodes are damaged, Then the module may be consuming current and have obvious heating.  In that case unplug the winding from the module.
