Thanks for the link.  I was a little surprised not to see William Stanley Jr. mentioned in the book.

RE: First Book on Transformer Engineering

(OP)
As mentioned in the book, the first patent on transformers was taken on 18th February 1885 by Zipernowsky and Deri of Ganz,Hungary. Key points of their invention over the "Secondary generator" ( the term transformer was first used by Hungarians)by Goulard (France) and Gibbs(England) were
1)A closed Iron Core instead of open core used so far

2) Both primary and secondary windings were connected in parallel(instead of series connected secondaries)

The above revolutionary changes brought about substantial reduction in no-oad current and constant voltages on both sides irrespective of load and varying current depending on the connected load ie lamps connected in parallel, instead of series as done till then.

William Stanley Jr took the US  patent no.349611 on 21st September 1886.He developed the transformer by acquiring the rights of patent by Gaulard and Gibbs. It was almost similar to Hungarian model. But he was the first to use E shaped laminations with two coils around the middle limb.

In the book"History Of Transformers" it was mentioned " The American electricians however, made the matter somewhat easier. They quietly waited untill the invention gave useful results in Europe ,and then simply imported it" ( Page 59)Americans were always clever!!
